Why I Bring Science, Scent, Heart, and Intuition Together
If you've spent any time exploring my Heartful Integrations sanctuary, you may have wondered how nursing, essential oils, HeartMath®, Reiki and oracle cards all ended up in the same room.
Fair question.
Sometimes I look at everything I do and think, Well, that's quite a mix.
But to me, it really isn't.
I've been a nurse for over 40 years, and nursing taught me to pay attention. Look at what's happening. Ask good questions. Don't assume. And yes, look at the evidence.
But nursing taught me something else, too.
People are so much more than what's on the chart.
We think. We feel. We react. We remember. We sense things we can't always explain. We carry stories, beliefs, stress, hopes and probably a few things we're still trying to figure out.
I know I do.
And that's really where Heartful Integrations began.
I Love Science. And I'm Still Curious.
I have a science brain. I can't turn it off, and honestly, I don't want to.
My nursing background and aromatherapy education matter to me. I want to know what's supported by research. I want to understand safety. I want to know when the evidence is strong, when it's still emerging and when we simply don't know.
But I also don't believe that we don't know yet means there's nothing worth exploring.
There is so much we're still learning about ourselves.
So I tend to live in that space between What do we know? and Hmm...isn't that interesting?
That's a pretty comfortable place for me.
Then There's Scent
Have you ever smelled something and suddenly you're somewhere else?
Maybe it's your grandmother's kitchen. A certain perfume. Pine trees. A hospital.
Someone you loved.
You haven't even had time to think about it, and there it is.
Memory. Feeling. Sometimes the whole darn story.
That's one of the things I love about working with aroma.
I'm not asking an essential oil to fix anybody. That's not how I see it.
Sometimes scent simply gives us a way to pause. To come back into the moment. To connect an aroma with an intention or a practice we're working on.
It can become a little sensory reminder:
Oh yeah. This is what I wanted to remember.
I think that's pretty powerful all by itself.
And Then I Found HeartMath®
I'll tell you something.
I was skeptical at first.
I wasn't introduced to HeartMath® and immediately think, Oh yes, this is absolutely for me.
Nope.
I needed to experience it.
And over time, I began noticing what happened when I actually practiced it. I had another way to work with my own stressors, become more aware of my reactions and create a little space before responding.
Sometimes that little space is everything.
It's the difference between reacting immediately and thinking, Okay, Barb. What do you actually want to do here?
HeartMath also gave my science brain something it really likes: technology that lets us observe heart rate variability and coherence patterns in real time.
So now we're talking heart and data?
Okay. You have my attention.
What About Intuition?
This is where things get really fun for me.
I've been intuitive for as long as I can remember. It isn't something I switch on when I'm doing a session. It's simply part of how I experience the world.
But intuition doesn't mean handing over your common sense.
When I use oracle cards, for example, I'm not interested in telling you that a card knows your future or that you should make a major life decision because we pulled the Three of Whatever.
That's giving the card way too much responsibility.
I use cards as another way to get curious.
Maybe an image catches your attention.
Maybe a word lands differently than you expected.
Maybe your immediate response is, Absolutely not.
Well...that's interesting too.
The card isn't the authority.
You are.
So Why Put All of This Together?
Because that's how I see people.
Whole.
I don't think we have to choose between being grounded and being spiritual.
I don't think appreciating research means we have to stop wondering about things we can't completely explain yet.
And I don't think intuition requires us to abandon critical thinking.
For me, it's not science or spirit.
It's not heart or head.
It's not evidence or curiosity.
There's room at the table for all of it.
That's why Heartful Integrations looks the way it does.
I bring my nursing background, aromatherapy, HeartMath®, energy work, intuition and a whole lot of life experience into the room.
Then we get curious together.
I'm not there to hand you all the answers.
I'm there to listen, ask questions, share what comes to me, and perhaps offer you a different lens for noticing what's already there.
Because sometimes we don't need someone else to tell us who we are or what we should do.
Sometimes we just need enough S P A C E to hear ourselves a little more clearly.
And maybe a good cup of coffee while we're at it.
